William F. Hunter – Biography

I came to the practice of law as a second career. My first career was in the tavern and restaurant business. I graduated from St. Michael’s College in Winooski Park, Vermont in 1969 and between then and 1991, I designed, constructed, owned and operated a number of different restaurants in Vermont, Massachusetts and Florida including Hannibul’s and B.T. McGuire’s in Burlington, Vermont, the Atlantic Café and Saratoga Steakhouse on Nantucket and Pop’s Tropi-Grill and Pelican Alley on the intercoastal waterway in Nokomis, Florida.

In 1993, after selling the Atlantic Café, and at the age of 47, I entered Quinnipiac School of Law in Hamden, Connecticut.  While in law school, I worked as a professor’s assistant tutoring first year students in Property Law, participated in the Federal Tax Prep Clinic assisting Connecticut residents in the preparation and filing of their annual federal tax returns and worked with the District Attorney’s Office in Norwalk, Connecticut filing and disposing of cases in the Norwalk Superior Court.  I graduated from Quinnipiac cum laude in 1995 and often look back at my time in law school as the best years of my life; needless to say, I found it to be a very rewarding experience.

After graduating from Quinnipiac, I returned to Nantucket as the Administrator of the Nantucket Zoning Board of Appeals and in 1996 I was invited to join the law firm of Vaughan and Dale, P.C.  In 1999 Foley and Kevin invited me to become a partner in the firm and Vaughan, Dale and Hunter was created, only to once again reform in 2007 as Vaughan, Dale, Hunter, Stetina and Beaudette, P.C. with the addition of Jeff Stetina and Rick Beaudette, two great young attorneys who had, independent of one another, relocated their families to Nantucket.

I have practiced law on Nantucket since 1996.  I regularly represent clients before various Nantucket Municipal Boards and Commissions, including the Zoning Board, Planning Board, Conservation Commission and Nantucket Historic District Commission. I am a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Massachusetts Conveyancer’s Association and Phi Delta Phi Law Fraternity.

I have served on the board of directors of Nantucket’s Big Brothers and Sisters and the Children’s House pre-school.  I live in ‘Sconset with my wife, Juliet and our wonderful daughter, Mei.  We love to travel and as a family look forward to making plans that include skiing, hiking, fishing and dining.  All in all, it’s a great life.
